Bring 'Em Out Alive Now, more than ever, this argument needs to be widely aired. SEVENTEEN YEARS AGO I first published a thoughtful and important analysis of the moral and legal issues involved in the subject of abortion. The analysis includes a practical solution to the political conundrum posed by the competing desires of some women to be spared bearing an unwelcome burden (albeit a burden arising, in the overwhelming majority of cases, from choices freely made by that woman) and the compelling, indeed, imperative interest of society to prohibit the taking of innocent life. In all those seventeen years, during which I have pointed to the analysis whenever given a pretext, such as on each anniversary of Roe v. Wade, or when the issue of abortion has been in the news, there has been, to my knowledge, not a single comment shared, nor any links or discussion of the piece anywhere. This has been very frustrating for me, needless to say. Nonetheless, I'm going to open myself up for more painful disregard and again urge everyone to read this argument now that the abortion issue is so thoroughly highlighted in the public discourse by the leak of what we will hope is indeed the impending decision of the Supreme Court on the issue. Please, everyone, read the argument. I know that because it takes a nuanced, libertarian position in which heed is taken of the legal and moral interests of both mother and child, the argument will strike some as being confusing. Or, it will seem to some to be too complicated, or insufficiently aggressive in favor of one side or the other. But as the current fulminations by pro-abortion activists in response to the leaked Supreme Court ruling demonstrate-- underscored by the fact that those currently infesting Washington are fully supportive of those fulminations and will do everything possible to encourage more of the same and worse, notwithstanding (and perhaps even welcoming) the resultant erosion of the rule of law-- a simple reversal by the Supreme Court of Roe is not going to settle the matter.
