The Irish Letter An occasional annual tradition of this page in honor of St. Patrick's Day, and for other reasons... THE FOLLOWING LETTER was found by a friend in his attic some years ago. It may vary rather a good bit from the tone of 21st Century St. Patrick's Day celebrations, but I'm not sure that recent tone hits the right note, anyway. After all, St. Patrick is honored for driving all the snakes out of Ireland, not for the invention of beer, green or otherwise. Many modern nations could use a good snake-purge, not least of all the USA. IN ANY EVENT, THIS LETTER offers a fascinating glimpse into a serious reality of the recent past-- British-occupied Ireland-- from which can be taken a lesson all liberty-loving people should keep in their hearts.
