Small Town I have been cluelessly naive to believe living in a small town could shelter me against the race war raging ‘out there’ in the world. Well, ‘Out there’ just become ‘here’. I live in a very small town with a population of just under 5000. Everyone knows everyone, not to mention everyone knowns everyone else’s business. But that is for another time. Last week, we had an incident on our local, city owned golf course. It was a weekend, which is always busy, especially with such great weather. Amongst the string of golfers, two black men were playing together. They were holding up play, so the course marshal went to talk with them. Upon asking these two black players something to the effect “Hey brothers, can you speed up play a bit?”, the proverbial excrement hit the wind device. The men proceeded to call the marshal a ‘cracker’ and a racist and it went downhill from there. At the front desk, accusations by the men were loudly and aggressively thrown out. The novice desk clerk attempted to explain the marshal is a God-fearing man and could never be a racist. You can guess how that went down. I’ve been smacked upside the head. Blacks and whites can no longer live in peace and harmony. Guess they tried that in a small town and got away with it. This time…. On a side note, when did blacks decide the word ‘brother’ was only a black thing?
