How fun. Received this email from our HOA about a week after we flew our flag upside down. Xxx and xxxxx Some neighbors have noticed your upside down flag at half mast. According to the rules of the American flag, this signifies distress, for example boarded by pirates (the example given). I am assuming that you are not under attack? The current cultural significance of an upside down flag is dissatisfaction with or disrespect for, depending on your interpretation, governmental activities. As I stated, we’re assuming that you’re not under distress since you have been seen around the neighborhood. And we can’t ask you to take your flag down or to fly it right side up as you have the right to express your opinion. However, please keep in mind that your actions may also be offensive to your neighbors. This is a touchy subject and difficult to address via e-mail without offending you.
