CULTURE CORNER Isle of the Dead (Die Toteninsel) is a painting by Swiss artist Arnold Böcklin (1827–1901). It proved to be so popular that he painted 6 versions of it between 1880 & 1901. Adolf Hitler purchased the 3rd version (1883) in 1933 - the year he was appointed chancellor of the German Reich. He hung it in his personal residence, a mountain retreat known as the Berghof. In 1940, he had it moved to the Reich's chancellery in Berlin. It is currently on display at the Alte Nationalgalerie, also in Berlin. This mysterious, atmospheric painting has fascinated art lovers for nearly a century and a half. #ArnoldBoecklin #AdolfHitler #AryanCulture #WhiteArt #Paintings
