REAL HEROES! - Venerable Gaspare Goggi Gaspare was born on January 6, 1877, in a wing of the castle of Pozzolo Formigaro, Italy, a large estate which his father Giuseppe Goggi had rented. Giuseppe was devoted to the Catholic faith along with his wife, Angela, who nurtured the family, with their 2 sons and daughter. The young family left the castle to a large agricultural estate and then rented an apartment in Tortona. As a child, Gaspare nourished his immense faith with constant prayer, including daily recital of the Rosary. He had a severe nosebleed at 13 which led to the diagnoses of pernicious anemia. From then on, he suffered grave physical weaknesses that also kept him from military service. He frequented the Cathedral where he met and befriended the future saint, Luigi Orione, who was a seminarian. Luigi advised him to attend the oratory that he recently organized. Gaspare had contemplated a priestly devotion which he confided in Luigi. In turn, Luigi told him to become a teacher 1st and then a priest. Luigi opened a boarding school which Gaspare attended. He went on to attend the University in Turin, graduating with honors. He had given courageous testimony to evangelical principles while at school, which had been hostile to the Church, and managed to involve fellow students. He was ordained a priest at 25, and made his religious profession within the Little Work of Divine Providence as founded by Luigi. He presented the formula of vows for the bishop's approval and played an important role in drafting the Rules of the Order. The next year he was transferred to Rome to the Saint Anne church in the Vatican, under the Pontificate's gaze. Many went to confess to him and he welcomed clerics and aspirants to religious life. He dealt with practices in the Vatican and acted as procurator for Luigi and the congregation. As part of Saint Pius X's fight against modernism, Gaspare was chosen as secretary to conduct the reports in Latin and assist in resolving various issues. Every year, because of his illness, he suffered bouts of exhaustion and debilitation with struggles to eat, disrupting his mental and spiritual concentration. In 1908, Luigi thought he would recover like he had in the past and would be destined for higher ranks within the Vatican. Instead, Gaspare worsened. On July 26th he celebrated his last Mass and came home completely exhausted. The following day he entered a state of extreme physical and psychological pain. The doctor recommended a specialist at the hospital in Alessandria. Upon entering its care, he took off his priestly robe, knelt down, kissed it, and handed it over. On August 4th, he died of his complications. On August 7th his funeral was held and during the celebrated Mass, at the words, 'fiat voluntas tua', of the Our Father, Saint Luigi Orione burst into tears. For God's Glory. REAL HEROES!
