REAL HEROES! - Blessed Bronisław Markiewicz "A single act or even multiple virtues are not enough; one must possess the Spirit of Christ." Bronisław was born on July 13, 1842, in Pruchnik, Galizia, of southern Poland, which was under Austrian rule, as the 6th of 11 children to John and Marianna Markiewicz. They were a devout lower-middle class family who faced hunger, poverty, and persecution because of their Catholic faith. He received religious education at home, but his faith wavered in his youth and high school because of the anti-religious atmosphere and as he tried to please his teachers. He overcame this darkness and felt a call to the priesthood. At 21, he entered the seminary and he was ordained 4 years later. After spending 6 years of pastoral work, he wanted to teach and sought to become better prepared to work with the youth. He attended a university to study pedagogy, philosophy, and history and was entrusted with a teaching position in pastoral theology at the Major Seminary of Przemyśl. Several years later, after hearing a call to religious life, he left for Italy and joined the Salesians where he met Saint John Bosco. He carried out various tasks but due to the austerity of the lifestyle and change in climate, he fell gravely ill with aggressive tuberculosis, coming close to death. Upon recovery, and with approval, he returned to his native Diocese. In 1897, and in the Spirit of Saint Bosco, he dedicated himself to the formation of poor and orphaned youth. and opened an institution where he offered students material, profession, and spiritual support, preparing them for life with a trade school. Because of economic conditions, he found it difficult to maintain the Italian model and his Salesian superiors did not agree with his modifications. Adapting the Salesian Rules, and with his Bishop's approval, he therefore founded 2 new religious congregations, one for men and the other for women, under the name, "Work and Temperance Society." Assisted by collaborators, he offered a home and formation to hundreds of children and gave of himself totally to them. He opened a new house near Cracow, where over 400 orphans found a home with the same formation and upbringing. His total dedication, heroic self-denial, and the enormous work he accomplished, quickly exhausted his strength. It undermined his health, which had been compromised from his time in Italy, and led to this death on January 29, 1912 at the age of 69. Both before and after his death, he was considered an extraordinary man. As the fame of the sanctity of him continued to increase, the Superiors of both religious institutions, asked the Bishop to initiate the process of beatification. 9 years after his death, the society was recognized by the Church and gave rise to 2 Congregations placed under the protection of Saint Michael the Archangel.
