Handel's Water Music premiered on July 17, 1717, for a royal barge excursion on the River Thames hosted by King George I. As a German-speaking, uncharismatic ruler who had difficulty with English, George I was deeply unpopular. Opposition politicians flocked to support his eldest son, the Prince of Wales (the future George II), who threw lavish parties to build his own popularity.
