Did you know that it was actually July 2nd that the founders signed the Declaration of Independence? It was July 4th when the first public reading occurred, which is why we celebrate that date (because that's when all the fireworks started). ;) 251 years ago, after the battle of Lexington and Concord in the spring, the war officially began, and the Continental Army was formed under General George Washington and the Battle of Bunker Hill was fought on June 17th. Over the following year, a group of leading colonial statesmen met together and eventually pledged their "lives, fortunes, and sacred honor" to secure our liberty. If you’ve studied this period of history, then you know just how much they sacrificed…and how some of them didn't get to personally enjoy the fruit of that sacrifice. Though much has changed in the years since then, and our liberties have been increasingly encroached upon in the last few years in particular, we still enjoy far more freedom and prosperity than most. Why? Because we’re still reaping the benefits of our forefather’s sacrifices. For that, I’m truly thankful. But it also makes you think… How are we making good use of the resources that God’s provided to us? What sacrifices are we making to secure liberty for our posterity? We’re enjoying the fruits of our forefathers' sacrifice, but we often don't fully appreciate the sacrifice itself. As a result, we can forget and grow apathetic, squandering our resources instead of using them wisely. It’s too easy to take everything for granted, even independence. This Independence Day weekend, challenge yourself. Look for ways to better steward your resources and preserve liberty for future generations.
