While watching the DVD version of Magical Shopping Arcade Abenoboshi on my Sony Blu-Ray player, I noticed combing artifacts. That's funny, I thought. Shouldn't the Blu-Ray player be deinterlacing this? After trying some adjustments, I discovered that changing the option 'Cinema Conversion Mode' from 'Auto' to 'Video' resolved this interlacing issue. But I became concerned that leaving the setting to 'Video' would lower the image quality for other DVD and Blu-Ray videos. So I changed it back to 'Auto' after watching Abenobashi. Curious about this issue, I did some research. And it turns out DVD videos are completely full of interlacing problems. DVD Video was designed for playback on interlaced television. That was the kind of TV in use when DVD was designed. Just because DVDs can contain progressive frames, and output this on progressive scan DVD players, doesn't mean the DVD Video format was designed for this. So interlacing artifacts are quite common when playing DVDs on HDTVs and other progressive scan displays. Blu-Ray videos seem to be designed better for this. I have never encountered any interlacing artifacts while watching Blu-Ray videos. But every Blu-Ray disc I own is encoded at 1080p 24fps. This really has changed my mind about collecting anime and movies on DVD. I think Blu-Ray really is the better format. For those curious about this issue.
