Quite the HUMONGOUS difference for which to watch, THAT’S for sure! Check it out: This passage will be the same one except some translators use one word while some use another. THESE ARE EXAMPLES ONLY! This, however, is one of those words which, if understood out of Scriptural context, has the ability to BADLY twist your thinking into more of a “works/law/legalism” thing compared to grace, like it’s supposed to. This is the A.D. Era now. We’re on “this” side of the finished work of Jesus. 1 JOHN 2:24 (NIV) As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. 1 JOHN 2:24 (BSB) As for you, let what you have heard from the beginning remain in you. If it does, you will also remain in the Son and in the Father. 1 JOHN 2:24 (ESV) Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father. 1 JOHN 2:24 (NKJV) Therefore let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. They’re both from the same word of “menetō”. The ROOT WORD in the original Greek is the same (see next paragraph). Worth considering: To “REMAIN” implies there is some effort needed on YOUR part. To “ABIDE” does not. Wherever you happen to abide is where you abide. You don’t need to “remain” where you “abide” since you already live there, in other words. (In Psalm 91:1, John 14:17, John 15:4, John 15:5, John 15:6, John 15:7, John 15:9-10, 1 John 2:6, 1 John 2:24, 1 John 2:27, 1 John 3:24, 1 John 4:12, 1 John 4:13, 1 John 4:15, 1 John 4:16 and so on (there may be more), not exactly sure why some translators opted for that word “remain” since the word “abide” is also what that word can mean in the Greek. The word “remains” implies some “salvation by works” thing. Cults push THAT type of junk doctrine stuff. “Menó” is what the root word is in Greek (https://biblehub.com/greek/3306.htm) and in the Hebrew it’s “luwn” (https://biblehub.com/hebrew/3885.htm). Since there are no contradictions in Scripture...EVER, whether it’s stated as “remains” or “abides”, it MUST be in line with all of Scripture. Eternal life can never be less than eternal life AND is guaranteed to someone born again (or “born from above” – or “born anew” – John 3:3-6 – https://biblehub.com/greek/509.htm)).
