Yesterday was a hard day. Arissa has what is almost certainly dehydration induced impaction colic. Thankfully she likely didn't start colicking until very early yesterday morning, so hadn't rolled too much and caused a torsion, when we found her at 6 a.m. morning, on the ground, soaked in sweat. But catching her relatively quickly meant that treatment was easier, safer, and more likely to be successful. When our vet arrived, he gave her a 60% chance of survival and we needed to get her transported to the closest university animal hospital 30 minutes away. Thanks to our wonderful community here we were able to get her there in good time. Thankfully once she was examined more thoroughly - labs, scans, etc, they doctors at the hospital were more optimistic. She will remain at the hospital until she is eating and drinking well on her own, minimum three days. There is also an anomaly with one of her ovaries, which could be partially causal, could be nothing, we'll check it again when she's fully recovered. Meanwhile, poor Pepito is alone, and if we come to the weekend and Arissa still isn't home, he will go stay with some friends so he isn't alone and stressed. With the long, hot summer we've had here they said they are seeing a lot of similar cases at the animal hospital. They theorize that it is in part due to the fact that the pasture grazing, where a horse normally gets a large part of their daily water, maybe in part to blame, the grass is completely dry and has been for months, and some horses aren't drinking enough to compensate.
