Survive the Jive (@StJ)

The gods continued to inspire Europeans throughout history. In the Romantic nationalist period this manifested in the Wagnerian ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk, which was an ideal aspired to by the Swiss artist Johann Michael Bossard (1874–1950). Near Hamburg, he built his great Kunststätte “art-stead” which boasts the grand Edda Hall. It is filled with expressionist depictions of the Germanic gods and sculptures inspired by Norse mythology. All styles and mediums of art are jumbled together in an eclectic and overwhelming Total Art experience which is as bewildering and surreal as our experience of the gods themselves. This scene was filmed in Germany to be included in Roots of the Saxons, but was cut as it was too much of a digression in a documentary that had already exceeded its intended run time. It was a shame to cut it tbh.
