Few teachers understand that the goal of teaching history is not to memorize dates and facts, and that students are not particularly interested in knowing the exact date of a battle or the birthday of a particular marshal, and in general – or at least, to a very small extent – are interested in knowing when the crown of their ancestors was placed on the head of some monarch. These are, of course, not considered important matters. Studying history means seeking and discovering the forces that are the causes of the results that appear before our eyes as historical events.
