Exhortation - August 27, 2026 Paul wrote about three main purposes of prophecy: "One who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation" (1 Corinthians 14:3). Edification refers to building up people in the faith and enabling them to be more effective in ministry. Exhortation pertains to admonishment and motivation for people to bear fruit that remains for God's advancing Kingdom, and it is the same as encouragement. Consolation means giving comfort or solace, or alleviating some kind of distress. "For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged" - 1Corinthians 14:31. The failure of ministries to equip the saints (train believers to disciple other believers) so that every individual part of the Body of Christ is functioning is a primary reason for the overall ineffectiveness of the church. There are those who have a present active relationship with Jesus. Others are satisfied with the fact that they are saved, and someday will be in Heaven with Jesus. Not having a present, active, ongoing spiritual experience, they are satisfied with being a "spectator" of all that the Lord is doing through the lives of others, along with attending "the" service, once each week. There life demonstrates their desire to be a "tourist." Matthew 16:24 - "Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." Song of Solomon 1:7 - "Tell me, you who my soul loves, where you feed you feed your flock, where you rest at mid-day." YOU BEG YOUR BELOVED (JESUS) TO SHOW YOU WHERE HE FEEDS HIS FLOCKS; YOU WANT TO EAT THE FOOD THAT HE GIVES THOSE THAT ARE UNDER HIS CARE. YOU DESIRE TO BE LOST IN GOD WITH JESUS WHERE YOU WILL WANT TO REST FOREVER. SIN CANNOT DECEIVE YOU THERE, AND HE WILL KEEP YOU FROM WANDERING AWAY. Psalm 23: 1,2,6 - "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
