On Easter weekend (April 2-9) a new movie is coming out on the Great Awakening (see http://www.agreatawakening.com). The Great Awakening was an evangelical revival of Christianity that swept through the American colonies in the early to mid-1700s and influenced societal changes in religion and politics. This revival moved colonists toward greater regard for human dignity, equality, and individual rights; religious tolerance; a democratic and independent spirit; and a common identity rooted in shared values. It created a new national awareness and unity among colonists prior to the American Revolution. Many historians believe this event was a key influence in the revolution and provided much of the philosophical and moral justification for the war.
