Molasses spills on Route 61 in Pennsylvania during a vehicle crash involving a farm tractor. ____________ SHAMOKIN TOWNSHIP — First responders dealt with a sticky situation Wednesday afternoon on Route 61, between Stonington and Paxinos, when molasses spilled after a Chevrolet Silverado struck the back of a John Deere farm tractor. The molasses — which, according to fire officials, is used by farmers to add ballast to equipment — was inside the tractor’s right-rear wheel, which dislodged from the rim. The dark syrup covered both lanes of travel, a mailbox and the Chevrolet Silverado, which also had extensive front-end damage. Several gallons of the substance remained inside the tire. Pennsylvania State Police, which investigated the crash, did not release a report Wednesday. Damage at the scene indicates both vehicles were in the northbound lane, just beyond the crest of a hill, when the crash occurred at about 2:30 p.m. The tractor, which had a safety triangle and revolving yellow light, continued north for about 75 yards, during which it crossed the southbound lane, before coming to a stop in a yard. The truck stopped in the northbound lane about 15 yards from the point of impact. Emergency medical technicians were on scene, but it did not appear that anybody had life-threatening injuries. Though the molasses was quite sticky, firefighters found it rather easy to use water from hoses to push the substance to the shoulders of the road.
