Crypto Exchange KYC Friction Index: Which Exchanges Make Verification Easiest? Crypto exchange KYC is no longer just: Upload ID → Take a selfie → Start trading. For many legitimate users, the real friction starts later. An exchange may ask for: • Proof of address • Another facial verification • Bank statements • Source of funds • Source of wealth • Wallet transaction histories • DeFi records • Tax information • Reverification • Additional documents before a large withdrawal So we built the DN KYC Friction Index 2027. The benchmark compares Kraken, Coinbase, OKX, Bybit, Bitget, VALR, Binance, Luno and CEX.IO across the complete verification journey. Our methodology measures: Initial Verification + Liveness + Proof of Address + Enhanced Due Diligence + Reverification + Withdrawal Reviews + Corporate KYB + Jurisdiction Complexity One distinction matters: Lower KYC friction does not mean weaker compliance. It means legitimate customers receive a clearer, more predictable verification experience. Our current findings: Kraken ranks first overall for its combination of automation, published processing expectations and source-of-funds transparency. Coinbase has one of the strongest mainstream automated verification systems. OKX stands out for fast routine verification and increasingly detailed ongoing-compliance guidance. Bybit has one of the clearest tiered KYC structures, moving from Standard to Advanced to Pro/EDD. VALR remains particularly strong for South African users. We also built the proprietary DN KYC Friction Calculator, which estimates how difficult verification may be based on your own circumstances, including transaction size, source-of-funds readiness, self-custody history and corporate complexity. Because the real question is not: “Does this exchange require KYC?” Almost every serious regulated exchange does.
