Joint Task Force Vulcan Update was launched by the U.S. Department of Justice in August 2019 under Attorney General William Barr as a “whole-of-government” effort to dismantle MS-13 leadership structures, not just street-level members. Directed by John Durham (son) What JTFV has been doing since then: Coordinating federal prosecutions across multiple U.S. districts simultaneously. Targeting “command and control” leadership in the U.S., El Salvador, Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala. Using racketeering, terrorism, narco-terrorism, firearms, murder, and conspiracy charges. Combining DOJ, FBI, HSI, DEA, ATF, Marshals, BOP, and foreign law enforcement resources into one operational structure. Major publicly known actions include: 2020 nationwide MS-13 leadership takedowns, including the “Hollywood Locos” clique and the first terrorism-related charges against an MS-13 member. Coordinated indictments in New York, Virginia, Nevada, Texas, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Utah, D.C., and elsewhere. International cooperation with Salvadoran anti-gang units and prosecutors. Continued arrests of high-ranking MS-13 fugitives through 2025. In April 2025, DOJ announced the arrest of Joel Vargas-Escobar (“Momia”), accused in an 11-murder conspiracy. DOJ specifically credited Joint Task Force Vulcan. What changed after 2021: There were public questions about whether the task force had been scaled back or deprioritized during the Biden administration because updates became less frequent. Senator Chuck Grassley publicly asked DOJ in 2021 whether Vulcan had effectively been shuttered. However, later DOJ releases showed Vulcan was still operating, though with less publicity. By 2024–2025, was active in several major MS-13 cases. More recent developments (2025–2026): There are reports that Vulcan’s scope may be expanding beyond MS-13 into broader transnational gang operations, including investigations tied to Tren de Aragua. So in broad terms, JTFV evolved from a focused anti-MS-13 strike force under Barr, into a quieter but continuing interagency prosecution unit, and now appears to be part of a broader transnational gang and cartel enforcement model under the current DOJ. BTW...IF Barr was deep state, WHY would he set this up?
