It is a legal term from a courtroom context where God acts as the Judge and declares a guilty sinner to be "not guilty" and perfectly righteous. This does not happen because the person suddenly becomes perfect on their own. It is because Jesus took the punishment for their sins on the cross, and Jesus' perfect goodness is credited directly to the believer's account. JESUS illustrated this truth in the Gospel of Matthew: >Matthew 18:23-27 23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. 24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. 25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. 27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. THIS is Justification in action, with Jesus as the King who holds our spiritual ledger. Facing total bankruptcy because the penalty of sin is death, we fall to our knees in broken repentance, admitting our unpayable debt and crying out for mercy. Moved with deep compassion, Jesus instantly clears our record to a balance of exactly zero—pardoning us completely, not by ignoring our debt, but by bearing that death penalty Himself and paying our debt with His blood on the cross. We did not earn it, buy it, or work for it. Our repentance and faith simply open our hands to receive this free legal pardon, proving that Jesus freely grants us justification the moment we turn away from our sins and place our faith entirely in His finished work as the final Passover Lamb. Through this wonderful act of justification, every past sin is completely forgiven, erasing our old spiritual record and making us a brand-new creature—a newborn baby becoming part of His body. >Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ PRAISE God for His love, mercy, and forgiveness!
