Meshtastic - This is quite an interesting open source hardware/firmware project. The goal: Employ tiny GPS receivers and LoRa radios to enable encrypted off-the-cell-grid situational awareness for small groups of people. Might be possible to add an IMU chip (for magnetic heading and step counting) and radio ranging so as to be useful even when GPS is unavailable. https://www.meshtastic.org/
