Buck the Golden Labrador Rattlesnake Dog: Buck was no ordinary Golden Lab. Sure, he had the classic soft golden fur and warm, loving eyes, but deep down, he had the instincts of a protector. From the moment he joined our family, I noticed something special about him—he had a keen sense of danger. Especially when it came to rattlesnakes. Buck was a city dog and he came to us from a family with 1 toddler and 1 younger infant and was just too big for the family at over 100lbs. Living on our 50 acre farm in rural Weld County, Colorado run-ins with these slithering threats were common, and Buck quickly became our first line of defense. Whenever he heard the familiar rattling sound, his ears would perk up, and he’d be off, ready to take action. One day, while working outside, I heard Buck barking and knew what he found. He darted toward the sound, positioning himself a safe distance away from the snake. He circled it slowly, never taking his eyes off the coiled reptile, but keeping just far enough that it couldn't strike. It was as if he knew exactly how to handle the situation. Buck’s method was precise. He’d bark, circle, and maintain control over the situation until I arrived. By the time I got there, he had the snake so distracted, it didn’t even notice me approaching. I was able to safely kill it and extract it from harming our grandchildren, livestock, and all of our dogs, thanks to Buck’s fearless vigilance. This became a routine. Buck would patrol the property like a true guardian, always alert for the sound of a rattlesnake, always ready to protect his family. It was remarkable how calm he remained, even in the face of danger. His natural bravery gave us peace of mind. Buck wasn’t just our loyal Golden Lab; he was the guardian of our home, He passed away at 12 years of age after a battle with cancer. We still miss him, We now have 3 Labrador Mixes and a German Shepherd and they are all good dogs in their own right. Most of our previous dogs have been rescued and most have lived to be over 12 years old. Aaaah, living in the Country. Again, thank you Buck.
