No Neutrality These are challenging times, I think all would agree. We are seeing long-held institutions and belief systems alike disintegrating. We are seeing people succumb to strange maladies, man-made or other, through self-administered poisons or strange accidents. Getting basic services is not always easy. Finding trustworthy, qualified professionals to help with home repair or medical attention or, God-forbid, spiritual guidance nearly impossible. Even as the spiritual reality of our existence is becoming more and more visible, like wildflowers blooming up between cracks of concrete, the material’s breakdown feels like an increase in density. It is heavy here and many of us are experiencing some profound shake-ups, some profound testing. We must level up our skills and we have to do so now. While it’s always important to remember, with all spiritual practice and real transformation work, that the process takes as long as it takes and trying to hurry can in fact slow you down, it’s also true that now more than ever it is essential to stay the course. To maintain a constant intention to break down the idol of self in order to be present and available for service, for God. Only in this way will our ability to discern what is true grow and that is the most important work we can do. The material challenges us in the precise ways we most need it in order to perceive something, understand something, or release self as the center of all our motivations, just a little bit more. The dramas in which we find ourselves are written and performed specifically to our needs. What is being revealed on the grand scale is astonishing but each of us gets to see the piece designed specifically for our own edification, our own purification. It’s easy to forget that what feels like personal and chaotic “bad luck,” punishment, or mundane material issues, are in fact specific and meaningful pathways to our own deeper essence. Our challenge is to remember that this indeed is theater and as such, temporary. We will only understand the whole narrative when we look at it holistically, zoomed out but with eyes open and focused. If we remain committed to truth, to loving truth with all our hearts, above all else, above comfort and safety and satiety, we will get to go home at the end. Friends, there is no neutrality available to you. You are either moving closer to the truth or farther away from it. There is no standing still.
