Published by Nordland-Verlag, it examines the 19th-century Kulturkampf between Chancellor Otto von Bismarck’s newly unified German Empire and the Roman Catholic Church. Eggers presents the Vatican and political Catholicism as an internationalist, anti-national force that sought to restrain and subordinate the rising German state. He portrays Bismarck’s policies as a necessary defense of German sovereignty and spirit against clerical influence. The work frames this historical conflict as unfinished business, urging contemporary Germans to complete the struggle for a “Rome-free” national destiny. Written from a strongly nationalist and National Socialist perspective, it reflects Eggers’s broader anti-clerical and völkisch worldview. The short book (around 110 pages) mixes historical narrative with commentary typical of Third Reich point of view.
