Today were going to confront a sacred cow in the modern Church tithing not because giving is wrong. But because we have turned a biblical principle into a distorted law that enslaved people under guilt pressure and manipulation. We are living in a time where the truth of Scripture is being traded for tradition. Where convenience is elevated over conviction. And where many pulpits have become platforms for profit rather than proclaimers of truth. The question is not whether Christians should give. The question is has the modern Church turned tithing into a sin by twisting scripture for selfish gain. Let's go to the word not to your favorite pastor, not to tradition, not to what we've always done, but to what God actually says. The concept of tithing is often heralded as a sacred duty in modern Churches preached with conviction and urgency. Yet when we open the scriptures with honest eyes and a desire for truth. We find that the 10 % tithe commonly taught today does not align with the biblical content from which it came. The command to tithe not originally given to the church, it was given under the mosaic law to the nation of Israel as part of their covenant relationship with God. It was a requirement yes, but a requirement for them not us. When people point to verses like Malachi 3 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse. They fail to mention that Malachi is speaking to Israel, not the church. In fact the storehouse was not a church building at all. It was a literal storehouse connected to the temple where food was stored for the priests, Levites and those in need. The tithe in the old testament wasn't about money, it was about agriculture produce, Grain, wine, oil and livestock. Given by the tribes of Israel to support the Levitical Priesthood who had no inheritance of their own. Israel's economy was not like ours. Their tithe wasn't cut from a paycheck or direct deposit into a bank account. It was the fruit of the land offered in obedience to God under a covenant that is no longer in force. When we rip that command from its conventional context and slap it onto the New Testament Church. We are not being faithful to scripture. We are mishandling the word of God. Not only that , tithing in the old testament was never just 10%. If you added up all the different ties festival tithes, Levitical tithes, and poor tithes. The actual number was closer to 23-25% annually. And again this was required under the law of Moses not under the covenant of Grace. So when a modern preacher demands that you give exactly 10% and threatens you with divine punishment if you don't. He is cherry picking from the old testament while ignoring the whole structure of the law. You cannot pick one rule from Leviticus and throw out the rest. It's either the whole law or none of it. And scripture is clear we are not under the law, but under Grace. Romans 6:14: Galatians 3:10 says All who rely on the works of the law are under a curse. That includes those who preach tithing as a legal mandate. To enforce a portion of the law New testament Believers without the full weight of that law is not just misleading, it's dangerous. It binds the people of God to something Christ has already fulfilled. And replaced with something better in Hebrews 7; the writer talks about how Jesus is our High Priest, not after the order of Aaron. But after the order of Melchizedek. Candid in that same chapter it says that when the priest it is changed the law must be changed also. Hebrews 7:12 that includes the law of tithing, which were tied directly to the Levitical Priesthood. That priesthood is gone , the temple is gone. The sacrificial system is gone. So why are we still clinging to an old requirement tied to a covenant that has been made obsolete. Let's be clear giving is still good, generosity is still godly. But the notion that you must give exactly 10% to be in right standard with God is not a new testament doctrine. It's a distortion rooted more in tradition than in truth. And when churches impose it as a spiritual law,. They step outside the bounds of sound Doctrine and into the territory of man made religion. That's not freedom, that's legalism. And legalism is a subtle form of bondage that masquerades as holiness. The truth is better , the truth sets you free. One of the most dangerous practices in the modern Church is not the outright denial of scripture but the subtle twisting of it. Nowhere is this more evident that some pastors and leaders manipulate People into tithing. They don't just teach giving, they pressure it, weaponize it, and use scripture out of context to create fear rather than faith. This isn't preaching it's manipulation and that manipulation is sin What we are seeing today in many pulpits is not biblical teaching, but A carefully crafted formula designed to make people feel guilty if they don't give.
