Watchers Were Vital Cogs In The Nations Active Homeland Radar Net During WW II. Ordinary citizens, including many sharp eyed teenagers, volunteered for the Army Air Forces Ground Observer Corps. They stood atop coastal towers, roofs and farm silos, manually scanning the skies with binoculars to detect enemy aircraft that flew too low for early radar to detect. Before Automated defense systems existed the entire country relied on ordinary communities organizing themselves into local networks to pass clean, unfiltered data down the line to protect the country.
