The first step in the PAPER blueprint is PAUSE. That may sound too simple, but it matters more than most people realise. When paperwork arrives, especially if it looks official or carries threatening language, many people go straight into reaction mode. They feel pressure, assume the worst, and want to do something immediately. That “something” is often a rushed phone call, an emotional reply, or a response made before the document has even been properly read. A pause interrupts that pattern. Pausing is not weakness, and it is not avoidance. It is the moment where you stop the emotional reaction from taking control. It gives you room to settle yourself and actually look at what is in front of you. Once you pause, you are in a better position to read carefully, spot assumptions, notice the wording, and begin keeping a proper record. Without that pause, people frequently act first and think later. The pause is what slows the whole process down. And when something has been sent in writing, slowing down is often one of the wisest first moves you can make.
