It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5‬:‭13‬ ‭ Scripture uses salt to personify various biblical truths and its use conveys different meanings according to the context of the scripture. •Too much salt kills living organisms. The Dead Sea is an example of the destructive nature of salt. Wildlife and plants do not grow there. Salt cuts off life. •In the biblical story of Sodom and Gomorrah, salt personifies death. Lot’s wife becomes a pillar of salt because she yearned for the wicked lifestyle they were escaping. •Farmers of that time might use salt to destroy the field of an enemy to kill the crops. Similarly, God used salt to kill the wicked fruit of Sodom. Conversely, the appropriate amount of salt acts as a preservative. •God commanded the Levites to sprinkle meat with salt symbolizing the preservation of His covenant with them. •God uses salt to represent an everlasting covenant with Aaron’s sons: “All the heave offerings of the holy things, which the children of Israel offer unto the LORD, have I given thee, and thy sons and thy daughters with thee, by a statute for ever: it is a covenant of salt for ever before the LORD unto thee and to thy seed with thee.” ‭‭Numbers‬ ‭18‬:‭19‬ Abijah referred to the covenant God made with David using salt as the everlasting preservative: “Hear me, thou Jeroboam, and all Israel; ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?” ‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭13‬:‭4‬-‭6‬ ‭ Paul uses salt to describe the Believer’s ability to use wisdom to defend the faith in a Christ-like manner: “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭4‬:‭6‬ ‭ In Matthew 5, Jesus portrayed salt in a positive light in his sermon to his followers. He emphasizes the role we fill in society. •He teaches Believers the importance of remaining true to our calling. •Salt without “saltiness” is worthless to the Kingdom of God. •Salt represents the internal authenticity of the Believer’s walk with Christ. •Jesus notes the loss to society if Believers fail as preservatives of life: “Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it?
