@Mullet @Escoffier @Heartiste Fun part is how Hindus became vegetarian to begin with. Old Hindu texts talk about the health benefits of all kinds of meat (not 100% sure on cow). India is invaded and conquered by Muslim Mughals. The Mughals are the ones who built the Taj Mahal. Invader/conquerors wanted to weaken the natives so they couldn't fight back as effectively. They took a vegetarian sect of Hinduism, Jainism, and promoted it widely. Now most Hindus are vegetarian. The practice of pushing vegetarianism to weaken a people so they can't fight back must be fairly common. Something similar was done in England, though prevention seemed to be economic/political not religious. The serfs were prevented from eating meat while the royal guards were given meat. That is where the term "beef-eater", like the name of the gin, comes from.
