Sometimes You Have to Show Up Tomorrow I have a property tax appeal hearing. Over the phone, because I’m in the middle of my Hebrew intensive at Oxford and I’m not missing that. It’s a small amount. Not life-changing money. But I’m showing up anyway because “showing up” means sitting in a quiet room with my notes and a phone line. Why? Because the process matters. I want to know how they come up with the numbers. I want to understand how they value a home, what data they use, how they justify what they say a piece of property is worth. I want to see the machine from the inside so that I can understand it. Once you know the game, you can play the game. I’m treating it as a learning experience. Maybe I win. Maybe I don’t. Either way, I walk away knowing more than I did, and that’s never a loss. Most people never appeal. They just pay. They take the number they’re given and assume it’s right or fair. Mostly, I think they're afraid. But the number is just a guess wearing a government stamp. And the only way to challenge a guess is to show up and know more than the person making it. I’ve spent my life learning how to read people. Body language, energy, the things left unsaid. A phone hearing changes that — no body to read, just a voice. So I’ll listen twice as hard. There’s just as much truth in a voice as there is in a body. Show up and ask questions so you can learn and eventually win the game. That’s how you stop being a passenger in your own life. Even from a phone line, miles away. Fitness Old School. Showing Up. Getting it Done.
