SILENCED: HEATH LEDGER Known for his versatility, Australian actor Heath Andrew Ledger has been hailed as one of the greatest actors of all time. After playing roles in Australian television and film productions during the 1990s, he moved to the United States to further develop his film career. Heath's breakthrough in 1999 came as the lead in the romantic comedy ''10 Things I Hate About You''. In 2004, he began a relationship with actress Michelle Williams, with whom he had a daughter, Matilda Rose. After the couple broke up, the press linked him with Helena Christensen, Kate Hudson, and Gemma Ward. In a 2007 interview published in The New York Times, Heath said he often couldn't sleep when taking on roles, and that portraying the Joker in ''The Dark Knight'' (2008) was causing his usual insomnia. At around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22nd 2008, he was found lying face down, unresponsive in his bed by his housekeeper, Teresa Solomon, and his massage therapist, Diana Wolozin, in the SoHo neighbourhood of Manhattan. Strangely enough, Wolozin telephoned Mary-Kate Olsen for help. The latter, who was in Los Angeles, directed her private security guard to go to the scene. Paramedics arrived at 3:33 p.m. but could not revive him. At 3:36 p.m., Heath was pronounced dead; he was 28 years old. The Medical Examiner's Office concluded that he died "as a result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine".
