She was the fourth of the ten van Dam children — sister to Benjamin, Jacob, Rebecca, Samuel, Rachel, Mozes, Miriam, Lea, and Isaac. Esther was 13 when the Germans invaded. From age 14 she wore the yellow star. In 1941 she was expelled from school and sent to a Jewish household school. She loved cooking and dreamed of having her own kitchen. In 1942 her father was taken for forced labor. Esther, at 15, became the mother to her seven younger siblings. She made soup from potato peels, sewed clothes from sacks, and sang to calm them during air raids. In early 1943 the van Dams were betrayed in hiding and sent to Kamp Vught. Esther was placed in the girls' children's barracks. On 6 June 1943 she was sent to Westerbork on the children's transport. On 8 June she was deported to Sobibor. She arrived on 11 June after three days in a sealed cattle car.
