THE CH-47 CHINOOK HAS ONE OF THE MOST UNUSUAL SILHOUETTES IN AVIATION — AND THE REASON IS PURE ENGINEERING. Most helicopters use one large main rotor and a smaller tail rotor. The CH-47 Chinook takes a completely different approach. It uses two large main rotors arranged in tandem, one at the front of the aircraft and one at the rear. Because both rotor systems contribute to lift, the Chinook does not need a conventional tail rotor. That allows more of the aircraft’s power to be devoted directly to lifting the helicopter and its load. The tandem arrangement also creates another major advantage: a long, relatively unobstructed fuselage between the two rotor systems. That space becomes a large cargo cabin with a rear loading ramp, giving the aircraft the ability to move personnel, supplies, equipment, and other large loads. The engineering behind the system is more complicated than simply placing two rotors on the same aircraft. The engines, transmissions, shafts, and rotor systems all have to work together as one coordinated drivetrain. That distinctive configuration has helped make the Chinook one of the most recognizable heavy-lift helicopters in the world.
