# Advice for GOP: Use convention to show voters importance of midterms With midterm elections fewer than 60 days away, Republicans staged their first-ever midterm convention this week at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. President Donald Trump addressed the gathering Wednesday night and Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to speak Thursday. Times columnist Robert Knight told American Family News the event exposes the deep divide between the parties. "The Democrats are for trans kids. They're for men in women's sports. They're for an open border," Knight said, also warning of a surge of self-described socialist candidates pulling the party toward communism. Democrats hold a roughly 5.7-point lead on the generic congressional ballot, according to RealClearPolitics, and history favors the party out of power. Knight urged Republicans to both expose the left's agenda and present a positive vision, saying, "I think they can chew gum and walk at the same time."
