# Prominent voices clash on ‘religious test’ requirement for public office A new book, "Five Views on Christian Nationalism," has sparked debate over whether the United States should formally acknowledge its Christian foundations, with Southern Baptist Theological Seminary president Albert Mohler proposing a constitutional amendment to do so. Mohler says different religious groups may participate in government if they acknowledge its Christian basis, but insists this is not a religious test for office. Roach of Veritas International University countered on AFR that compelling such acknowledgment "is the definition of a religious test," even if called by another name. Land, president emeritus of Southern Evangelical Seminary, said he was "surprised and bewildered" by Mohler's proposal after three decades of work together. Land warned it would diminish "soul freedom" and noted the Baptist confession holds "a free church in a free state is the Christian ideal."
