It is an image we have all seen countless times before: a starving child collapsed in the Sudanese dirt, a vulture waiting just feet behind. For over thirty years, this photograph epitomized the Western concept of Africa—impoverished, emaciated, systematically exploited—challenging us to confront our implied indifference and complicity. In truth, however, almost nothing about this interpretation is true.
