__The inscriptions shown in the image are not from the 1st century.__ They are most likely 3rd-century graffiti from the Memoria Apostolorum (the "Memory of the Apostles") within the Roman Catacombs, specifically the Catacombs of San Sebastiano on the Via Appia. Even if they were from the first century, __the apostles did not explicitly prescribe praying to dead saints in the New Testament. The apostles and first-century Christians did not pray to the deceased. __They did not pray to Stephen, the first martyr, nor did they make or venerate statues of him.__ The practice of invoking the intercession of Saints Peter and Paul with inscriptions like "*Pauli ed Petre, petite pro Victore*" (Peter and Paul, pray for Victor) became common in the mid-3rd century, particularly after 258 AD.
