Death of physical games on Consoles had been coming for over a decade. Main reason? Discs could not keep up with the capacity & speed needed. Cartridges are better. Problem is you would need something like CompactFlash with up to 256gb of storage that would also be fast & cheap. Current gen consoles almost didn't had disc drives. The only reason both got a disc drive last minute was because of direct backwards compatibility with the previous generation of consoles. On the first year of current gen. Physical was already at 25%-30%. Now it is at 10%. Even when it comes to Nintendo that always had a stronger culture of physical games. It is now at 30%. But in the case of Nintendo it is because Switch cartridges are too expensive apart of not ample or fast enough for 3rd party game studios. Reason for that is the small form factor, which makes it more expensive to make by default. In theory, both Xbox & Playstation could have come together & saved physical games deciding on a new flash storage based format IF that had been done in 2020. As sharing it would have got it to scale enough to make it cheap enough. The issue? Both wanted the change to digital only It could be by design that Nintendo didn't improved the Switch 2 cartridges enough by making the format faster and have more capacity while also making it a bigger cartridge to try to make it cheaper. As that would also force the move to digital only on the next Nintendo Console.
