Hidden in Plain Sight: The Use of Coded Symbolism in Children’s Media? I was watching a children's show with a young relative recently, a program he genuinely seemed to enjoy. However, as I watched, I became increasingly unsettled, and eventually shocked, when I noticed visual symbols used throughout the program that are directly tied to documented illicit subcultures. (see attached images of a few examples. Throughout the entire program there appeared to be hundreds of this specific symbol.) And it was rampant! These specific geometric symbols, which are publicly cataloged in law enforcement resources, including past informational documents published by the FBI, were identified as emblems co-opted by pedophile networks to covertly signal shared preferences. What concerns me deeply is how frequently these exact shapes such as specific nested spirals, triangles, and hearts appear across children's media, animated shows, corporate branding, and toys marketed directly to minors. The Historical Precedent of Symbolism To understand why this is so concerning, one must look at how symbolism has functioned throughout history. Symbolism is as old as human communication. Long before standardized written language, societies relied on symbols to convey complex ideas, signal identity, and establish alliances. Coded Identification: Persecuted or clandestine groups throughout history from early Christians using the Ichthys (fish) symbol in ancient Rome to political underground movements have routinely used subtle visual markers to identify one another without alerting the general public. Co-optation of Symbols: Symbols also frequently change meaning over time. A prominent historical example is the swastika originally an ancient Eurasian motif representing good fortune, which was co-opted in the 20th century by the Nazi regime, permanently altering its cultural meaning in the West. Much like these historical precedents, illicit subcultures have adopted simple, recognizable shapes as a silent language. It allows individuals within those networks to communicate in plain sight while remaining invisible to those who don't know what to look for. Coincidence or Intentional Design? There are two primary viewpoints on why these shapes appear so frequently: The Design Perspective (Overlapping Basic Shapes) Graphic designers often point out that basic geometric figures, spirals, hearts, overlapping triangles, and butterflies are the foundational building blocks of visual art. They are visually engaging, easy for young children to process, and extremely common in animation background art. From this perspective, their appearance in children's media is often the result of lazy design choices, visual trends, or simple ignorance on the part of artists who are unaware of how these shapes have been co-opted in dark corners of the internet. The Vigilance Perspective (A Lack of Vetting and Oversight) On the other hand, given how well-documented these symbols have been in law enforcement circles for years, many argue that ignorance is no longer an acceptable excuse. Whether the inclusion of these symbols is driven by intentional malice from individual creators or a complete failure of corporate oversight and quality control, the result remains deeply unsettling. Anyone producing content or products specifically catering to children should be held to a higher standard of awareness. Conclusion: Keep Your Eyes Open What is perhaps most disturbing is how oblivious the general public remains. Most parents have no idea these visual identifiers exist, leaving them unable to recognize what is playing right in front of their children's eyes. If a criminal network adopted an extraordinarily complex or unusual symbol, it would immediately attract attention and scrutiny from the public. By co-opting basic geometry, like a heart inside a heart or a spiral triangle the symbol functions as "hiding in plain sight". The symbol was chosen to look like standard children’s decor so that it wouldn’t raise red flags to an untrained observer. Whether these occurrences are driven by careless artistic coincidence or something more deliberate, one fact remains clear: awareness is our best line of defense.
