Does God have a sense of humor? Yes, I think it’s obvious. I say so because humor is a good thing, laughter and surprise, thus it comes from the Lord’s hand. But it begs the question, what is His sense of humor? Can it be discerned? Perhaps only in part, but to gain deeper clarity I will say that a sharp sense of humor is seen in the delicate balance of the absurd and the true, and what can be more exemplary than the absurdity of God’s goodness to a people once at odds. To grasp this hilarious truth is to be struck by a divine punchline: I AM that I AM. To wander about clown word, anxiety ridden and tremulous, is to fear that the joke has no culmination, and is indeed no laughing matter at all. I think there are evil and humorless agents who advance just such terrorism. But I also hear a laughter rising over the horizon reaching my ears and tickling my funniest bones. It rattles my skeleton and those beside me in the valley parched and dry. The Great Honktopian Honkering laughs in harmonic accord with the laughter roiling from the throne-room of Heaven. Evil men stepping on rakes. Wicked women falling down awkwardly. Earnest elitists splitting their pants while sharding and farding. The radical absurdity of God’s Love.
