Wholesome Americana by Hamlin Garland. I found this autobiography in some corner of my house and put my glasses on and started reading. Garland tells the story of his migrant life as a farmer, from his solipsistic boyhood plowing 10 hours a day to his eventual move to a village and introduction to agnosticism and higher education. I'm only halfway through. Can't wait to find out what happens! I see already in it the degradation of Christianity - the loss of good habits, slowly eroded by materialism, loss of Christian education, and lack of access to spiritual directors throughout life. Still a wholesome read, and with hints at American chivalry, the new aristocracy for a new world, and the coming desolation of atheism. May add more when I finish the book.
