Handyman Tip: Pest bait-poison I read about a simple cockroach bait I put out in little containers and haven't seen any more live, but some dead. This is a good trend. We'll see how it goes over time. Equal parts sugar, baking soda and borax (laundry additive) mixed together thoroughly. The sugar is the bait and the soda and borax do them in. It's not instantaneous like spray in a can, but it is eventually effective, not toxic to humans like spray can ant/roach killer is (though you don't want to eat borax) and it is inexpensive. If you're concerned about risk to children or pets inside your home, leave out the borax. Assume it's not pet-safe! Does it also work for rodents? Don't know.
