THE SYSTEM THAT CANNOT BE QUESTIONED A Transmission on Child Removal, Institutional Incentives, Foster-Care Vulnerability, and the Power That Operates Behind Closed Doors There are few powers more extreme than the power to take a child. The state may seize property, restrict movement, impose fines, and imprison those convicted of crimes. Yet the forced separation of a parent and child reaches somewhere deeper. It enters the private architecture of identity, attachment, memory, and belonging. It does not merely alter where a child sleeps. It can divide a life into before and after. That authority is sometimes necessary. A child being beaten, starved, sexually assaulted, abandoned, or exposed to an immediate and serious danger requires protection. No serious critique of child welfare needs to deny that. The real question begins where the easy answer ends: What happens when an institution created to rescue children acquires the power to define danger, present the evidence, recommend removal, supervise the aftermath, investigate its own failures, and defend itself from accountability? That is not merely child protection. That is an architecture of power. And power must be examined not only by the intentions it announces, but by the incentives it obeys, the mistakes it rewards, the evidence it suppresses, the people it silences, and the lives it leaves behind.
