A duo of Ernie Pyle books that I've had on my shelves for years and for some reason I've only read one, which was well done and I can certainly see how he earned the reputation he did and was beloved. One of the things that set Pyle's reporting apart was his folksy way of saying "these are the guys from a town very much like yours and a couple of city boys that you'd get along with, this is what they're doing and how it is a HUGE task that is very important in the grand scheme of the war." At home, they're just Joe and Jim and when you talk to them they'll say "yeah, I helped build bridges" or "I was a truck driver." but Pyle is saying that Joe and Jim are delivering tons of much needed supplies like food, water and ammunition and without them the war effort stops work and the enemy has time to regroup and resupply to kill more Americans. He's saying that without that bridge, not only would the men, tanks and trucks stop, it means that the enemy uses that time against our guys. That's an explanation that really is so beneficial to the average reader back in the US who has never been to the nations they're reading about. Those anonymous Joe and Jim aren't just doing a job, they're in the RIGHT PLACE at the RIGHT TIME to help WIN!
