Continuing on the Second World War theme, I recently found these ration books at a store. One of the books even had a full sheet of stamps left - that must have been a scrimp and save kind of sacrifice, to have stamps left over! Keep in mind, even if you HAD stamps, the stores only had what they had when you showed up. Meat or eggs weren't produced in the kinds of quantities we now thing normal. That's why the government published many pamphlets on "victory gardens" and how to grow food, canning, and even raising poultry at home. Notice that our government didn't do that in the economic downturns of the 70s and beyond? Because they're not on our side anymore.
