Happy Disability Pride Month from Dylan Rothbein Liberty Coalition! July is Disability pride month because we got our rights in the month of July with the signing of the ADA! During this month we acknowledge we are proud to be disabled because we are proud of our legacy and culture, Temple Grandin often says “where would we be without autistic people?” So we ask you, where would we all be without disabled people? Disability studies teaches us disability is part of the human experience and we are just as human as anyone else leaving in a world that may not be accessible so we have to try harder but that does not make us any less proud of what we earned, like the disability studies scholars who helped shape disability culture, we acknowledge disability culture is shaped by our supports and caretakers and allies, who set the stage for our freedoms by working in partnership in an inaccessible world to help us reach our full potentials, whether its a parent at an IEP meeting or another disabled adult or vocational rehab specialists. When we succeed our allies succeed. We are the embodiment of our hard work and those of our allies like our service dogs because disability pride is for all of us. Disability culture and pride is also disability media like “Crip Camp” which examines our place in the American story, and smaller independent companies like Crip Video Productions and documentaries like “What The Body Believes”, to musicians like Dylan Rothbein who embodies the pride of our community. The tools we lose have become culture like naming wheelchairs to having social media channels named after service dogs. To the able bodied people around us we invite you to join our culture and we want to contribute to yours in our shared humanity. #freedomofthepressforthedisabled #disabilityrepresentationinthemediaisthefreemarketatwork #disabilityrepresentationisfreemarketcapitalism #firstamendmentforcripples #disabilityrepresentationismeritorcy #disabilitymediaistheAmericandream #disabledAmericansarepatriots #thereisnothingmorepatrioticthanadisabilityorientedproduction #disabledinthemediawouldmakeBenFranklinproud
