Some of the key advocates for Japonisme were Jewish, notably Roger Marx and Siegfried Bing. The entire trajectory from Japonisme, through Matisse and Picasso, to Abstract Expressionism was supported by Jews. Apparently, it was not just Jews trying to force ugliness into Western culture, though that was the result. Jewish critics praise Rothko based on the second commandment, "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image." By making his paintings completely abstract, Rothko made his art kosher. The process of Western art turning from figurative to abstract, then, was the process of lehachshir, to make Western art kosher. Then why is Jack Kirby okay? Because Jewish intellectuals don't regard comic book heroes as graven images, but rather as golems. The famous image of Captain America punching Hitler is literally a golem fighting an enemy of the Jew. This is why Jews don't tolerate figurative high art but are okay with comic books and video games.
