Beneath the grandiosity is not strength but a void so early and so total that the mask became load-bearing. Remove it, even gently, and there is no structure underneath to hold the weight. This is why confrontation so rarely produces remorse — there is no one home to feel it. What we call "narcissistic supply" is not vanity. It is life support. The narcissist does not extract admiration because they feel superior — they extract it because without it, they cease, psychically, to exist at all. Understanding this does not excuse the harm.
