Attention Florida! I honestly cannot believe how many people who call themselves conservatives are announcing that they will vote for David Jolly simply because they hate Byron Donalds. You do not have to like Byron. I certainly do not. I did not support him in the primary, and my problems with him did not magically disappear when he won. But before you vote for Jolly, understand exactly what you are voting for. 1. CODIFYING ROE AND CASEY Jolly wants Florida to codify the Roe and Casey abortion framework into state law. 2. BANNING SO-CALLED ASSAULT WEAPONS Jolly wants Florida to ban the sale of firearms that Democrats classify as assault weapons. 3. GUN LICENSING AND MORE RED FLAG LAWS He supports universal background checks, wants Florida to consider gun licensing and wants to expand the state’s red flag laws. 4. MEDICAID EXPANSION Jolly wants Florida to expand Medicaid and dramatically increase the government’s role in providing healthcare. 5. RESTRICTING SCHOOL CHOICE He wants school vouchers to be means-tested and private schools accepting vouchers to follow additional government mandates. That means fewer families qualifying and more state control over private education. 6. DRAMATICALLY INCREASING GOVERNMENT SPENDING ON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Jolly openly calls for a dramatic increase in state investment in public schools. He promises more spending without clearly explaining where all that additional money will come from. 7. CREATING A STATE CATASTROPHE INSURANCE FUND He wants natural-disaster risk removed from the private insurance market and placed under a state-backed catastrophe fund. 8. STATE-BACKED, INTEREST-FREE CONDOMINIUM LOANS Jolly wants the state to provide interest-free loans to condominium owners and associations. Whatever pretty name is placed on it, government-backed loans involve public money and public risk. 9. GOVERNMENT-MANDATED RENEWABLE ENERGY He wants Florida’s government to require greater integration of renewable-energy technology into public utilities and adopt a statewide climate and sustainability agenda. 10. MAKING FLORIDA’S CONSTITUTION EASIER TO CHANGE Jolly wants constitutional amendments to be easier to place on the ballot. He also says the governor should fight to enact an amendment receiving more than 50 percent of the vote. Florida currently requires 60 percent for a constitutional amendment to pass. That 60 percent protects our Constitution from being rewritten by a temporary, razor-thin majority. 11. EXPANDING LOCAL CONTROL OVER POLICING Jolly wants more local control over community policing while placing specific emphasis on racial and immigrant disparities in the criminal justice system. 12. REVERSING FLORIDA’S APPROACH TO GENDER-RELATED MEDICAL TREATMENT FOR MINORS Jolly says the government should stay out of gender-related medical decisions made by families and doctors. For accuracy, he has not publicly said that he supports surgeries on young children, and an advertisement making that specific claim was found to be misleading. What he has supported is removing government from these decisions, including decisions involving minors, rather than maintaining Florida’s current restrictions. 13. OPPOSING REPUBLICAN IMMIGRATION POLICIES Jolly has criticized Republican immigration enforcement, arguing that it tightens the labor supply and increases costs. His campaign says Florida should embrace immigrant communities, but his published platform offers very little detail about illegal immigration, cooperation with federal enforcement or sanctuary policies. This is not a collection of Republican accusations. Most of it comes directly from David Jolly’s own campaign platform and public statements. You have every right to vote for whomever you choose. But hatred for Byron Donalds does not transform David Jolly’s agenda into a conservative agenda. A vote against Byron is still a vote for Jolly. It is a vote for abortion protections, gun restrictions, Medicaid expansion, more government spending, climate mandates, weaker protections for Florida’s Constitution and the reversal of policies conservatives spent years putting into place. If you support all of that, own it. But do not expect the rest of us to pretend it is a conservative vote.
