Visigoth leader Pelagius and his Christian army of just 300 men, won a decisive victory over a numerically superior mohammedan army at the Battle of Covadonga in 720. Before the battle, Pelagius prayed for victory in a cave where a hermit had hidden a statue of the Virgin Mary. In the battle the Christians made good use of natural defenses, and made a horrific slaughter of the enemy. This victory is regarded as the start of the Christian Reconquista of Spain from the mohammedan invaders. Pelagius credited the miraculous outcome to the intersession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The battle is commemorated at the shrine of Our Lady of Covadonga.
